Dining at Castaway Cay: Cookie's BBQ | Eating WDW

Cookie?s BBQ is one of two buffet dining options on Castaway Cay. It?s the first eatery you?ll pass on the island. Cookie?s Too is a bit further away on the extended family beach section which was created to accommodate the larger numbers of guests on the Dream and Fantasy ships. Both offer the same fare, so depending on when your hunger hits or where you plan on spending your day, you can find a convenient place to eat.

A soda fountain is available, and while the options are pretty standard, I?m just happy Sprite Zero is available since I prefer to avoid sugar and caffeine in my drinks when I can.

The first section of the buffet offers potato salad, coleslaw, couscous salad and a tomato salad.

Moving on to the next section, you?ll find spicy fried chicken and hamburger patties, assembled chicken sandwiches and cheeseburgers, hot dogs and buns, boiled corn, and sauerkraut.

Slightly further down the aisle are Cajun spiced chicken, BBQ ribs, vegetarian chili, and grilled salmon.

Keep an eye open for the Garlic & Mozzarella Flatbread!

Desserts include chocolate chip cookies, pineapple upside down cake, banana bread and fruit salad. Bags of Lay?s potato chips are also available in plain and Barbecue flavors.

Matt scooped up some tomato salad, couscous and coleslaw, and also brought back some chicken, ribs, and salmon.

The couscous was dry and didn?t have any seasoning. It was nowhere near as good as what served at Tangierine Cafe in Epcot?s Morocco pavilion! The tomato salad didn?t fare much better, but if nothing else, the tomatoes and onions themselves were good.

Matt found the salmon to be one of the better items available despite not being a fan of the fish cooked. He liked the way it was seasoned, the grilled taste, and the fact that it didn?t have that strong fishy taste it can sometimes get when prepared.

The grilled chicken was okay, but a bit on the dry side. The skin was nicely browned, though.

The banana bread was standard plus a nice option, but it doesn?t really say ?beach? or ?cookout? food to me.

My plate echoed a few of Matt?s choices. I grabbed one of the spicy chicken filets, the garlic & mozzarella flatbread, a rib, and a hot dog with some of the sauerkraut. The ribs were cooked well, and not being a fan of ribs, I did actually eat most of the meat I could pick off of it. They were a bit fatty though, and they weren?t Matt?s top pick (although he?s a bit more of a connoisseur!).

I was hoping the hot dog would have a bit more flavor thanks to being grilled instead of steamed, but even with some mustard it was still a Disney dog.

The sauerkraut hardly tasted pickled at all, and really just tasted like boiled cabbage.

The garlic & mozzarella flatbread, on the other hand, was a highlight. The garlicky flavor shined, and while the bread wasn?t particularly toasted, they were probably one of the best items we sampled at Cookies.

If you like coleslaw that?s just shredded cabbage and carrots mixed with mayonnaise with no trace of salt or pepper or anything else, you?ll love it here. Pass. The spicy chicken filet, on the other hand, was delicious. It wasn?t overly spicy but the heat went beyond black pepper. The chicken was moist and the breading was crisp.

Another highlight was the fruit salad. I know, it?s just diced fruit, but on a hot beach in open air seating, it?s light and refreshing!

Cookie?s BBQ is in no way fine dining. If you?re not a fan of cookout food, you might want to fill up on breakfast before heading out for the day and go to Cookie?s for a snack as opposed to a meal to hold you over until dinner. The food is kid friendly, and the informal environment is a nice getaway especially for children who have likely had their fill of long table service dinners. If you?ve never been, definitely check this or Cookie?s Too out to at least say you?ve tried it, and be on the lookout to see which items get changed up!

When you?re on a Disney Cruise and stop at Castaway Cay, do you grab a beach side lunch from Cookie?s?
