To be successful, fitness programs need to be based of sound training principles and be individualized to meet unique health and lifestyle goals of each person. This is especially true for programs focused on Elders and people with special needs. Program design within Aboriginal communities need to include the climate for learning and the health and wellness challenges that may be barriers that may prevent people from exercising. This one day workshop will look at the following steps of program design for Elders and people with special needs with culturally sensitive discussions:

  1. Methods for consultation with the Community members on their program needs
  2. Partnership with other Health Professionals to set program goals for community member
  3. Testing, Screening and Focusing on community member?s abilities
  4. Set a Climate for Learning, Planning, and Goal setting with the Community member
  5. Establish Goals with the Community member
  6. Design a plan that includes partnerships with health professionals, that includes the community members goals, motivation and adherence tools

This workshop is designed for the Aboriginal community health care representative, health care worker, recreation worker or an individual involved in health and wellness programming who may want to understand the theories behind developing and attaining goals for Elders and people with special needs.
